Both use different examples, with Bertin making his own and Tufte drawing from favorably considered precedents. The book is a very good guide for the basis on how to construct diagrams and other graphics. Envisioning Information by Edward R. Bertin treats information transfer thru display in the French way, beautifully constructed texts and a severe logic. Some of the pictures are neat, and it does make you think about things like which dimension of graphical differentiation to use to display data, but I don’t think I’ll be using this bertln much for guidance.
If you learn better from one than the other, great, but why deprive yourself of learning from both? Tufte’s books have captured a lot of Bertin’s jacquds regarding the visual aspect of graphics which is, in my experience, now all that is meant by “graphics”and in a more clear, succinct, and possibly even comprehensive manner. Tukeythen breathe deeply and dive in.
I was especially interested in the typography of graphics, and the book doesn’t seem to give this topic much attention. Amazon Advertising Find, attract, and engage customers.
The figures are labelled in unpredictable orders on the page, some never mentioned in the text, and because of a mediocre printing job, many exhibit the very errors Bertin seeks to show how to avoid. Using Gra;hics to Think Interactive Technologies.
