It could be used to foster discussion about different forms of government and how they compare to a democracy. It also could spark a debate about making difficult choices. However, the author is from Chile, which has been ruled by dictators, so he probably left the country out so as to avoid trouble. Children enjoy this book because although it is a picture book, there is still so much that even an adult could gather from the book and learn about different wars and dictatorships that have occurred in South America.
