The 46 chapters are short in today’s world, I imagine they’d have been blog posts and easily digestible, but full of food for thought. We demand the fruit immediately even though the root may be weak and knobby or missing altogether.

It would not be far-fetched to state that Tozer’s works remind me of Spurgeon Tozer, The Root of the Righteous. This is one of his best. Many of us Christians have hte extremely skillful in arranging our lives so as to admit the truth of Christianity without being embarrassed by its implications. Many very good books have numerous sections that I will bracket or underline so that I can find them quickly in the future. And it might shock some of us profoundly if we were brought suddenly face to face with our beliefs and forced to test them in the fires of practical living.
Tozer’s style is very casual and conversational and easy to understand. My heart is always troubled when I read his works.
This book was incredible. In this collection of short essays, Tozer writes about the need for communion with God in the life of the believer.

In order for our roots to grow deeply, we must have the discipline of cultivation and in that cultivation to grow in the knowledge of God. This appears in our attitude toward certain great Christian souls whose names are honored among the churches, as, for instance, Augustine and Bernard in earlier times, or Luther and Wesley in times more recent.
