Naturally, his intelligence, courage, and goodness help him collect even more allies by the time this one is over. The characters are engaging and adequately complex, the plot starts well and grows satisfyingly convoluted, and there is plenty of action to drive things forward.
Starting this book was like a family reunion, and sure enough, everyone’s there.

Maybe they’ll play a larger role in the next book. The book begins with Octavian negotiating with Captain Demos of the trading vessel called the Slive, to book passage princels Octavian and his contingent to cross the sea and reach the Canean homeland with Varg.
I was genuinely sad to put this book down, and the idea of having to wait another 12 months for the next one is a painful one. Then came the endless trials and triumphs of a man whose allera and power could not be restrained… When Tavi attended the Academy in Alera Imperia, the bestial Canim—centuries-old enemies of Alera—orchestrated an attack on the palace and Gaius Sextus himself, and Tavi fought covex for the realm.
My five stars are for the entire series, but I’m too busy lazy! My guts are an unholy mess and will doubtless begin to stink in short order. We learn a lot more about the Alerans, and see that people can be just as petty towards their fellow man under even aleta most dire of circumstances.
Even fantastic worlds aren’t perfect. Named her after my first wife. Ok, now last time around, I whined a bit about Bernard and Amara being the most boring couple on the planet to read about. Extensive action and battle sequences in this one, executed fantastically.

I felt a tad disappointed. We went for about ten hours, all the way around Garden Lane and Craft Lane both. Maybe because I am a Jim Butcher long-term fan And so on and so on…. My least favorite parts have to do with the Vord, but in this book they are still mostly relegated to the setting.
His characters ARE real,they bleed,they plot,they make mistakes,they die,they sacrifice themselves while battling with their inner demons. I have so many new favorites.
