Gatss Marcus is 14, he joins the Fourth Macedonian Legion to earn his fortune; Gaius remains by his uncle’s side. I have always disagreed with this kind of masculinity, thinking it quite primitive and obsolete I rolled my eyes so hard when it was mentioned how murdering and conquering were the most important things in life for an intelligent man, I’m surprised none of you heard it tbh. He grows up with Marcus Brutus yes, I know, this is historically inaccurate.

Much of the book deals with the brutal regimen that Renius imposes, one that makes them men but causes them to hate their harsh mentor. However, the reality of the period is well described and as always, it is better to igglden some idea about this very important period in our civilization, than none at all. With nothing left but his life and his name, Julius signs on with a naval legion where he finds od childhood nemesis Suetonius and swears to return once he is able to avenge his uncle.

After first acquainting myself with this author through his Genghis Khan “Conqueror” series, I had high hopes. Well worth 5 stars and a recommended read, This book fleshes out the possible early life of Julius Caeser in typical Iggulden style, full of action, adventure and possessed of a fine pace. The Gates of Rome Author Info: I just don’t think I was feeling it – there was a lot of intense dissection of what makes a man “a man” and how his brutal force of killing and strength makes the Empire great and impenetrable.
He then decided to write a fictional epic about Caesar and spent holidays researching ancient Rome. And while there are those thousands of readers who don’t know the history enough to know that this book is an alternate history, there sure are thousands that do. Well written, the story comes alive and is difficult to put down. I’ll still finish out the series but why does every author write about Rome and this time period in such pedantically humorless tones? This particular one was the first one Alex Jennings narrated and it is amazing how, even early on, he has a talent for the voices and a skilful clear narrative.

In parts I felt the story at times would jar, but this can be forgiven as I may have been reading with tired eyes after reading so much each sitting due to the excitement and intrigue the story brings. He just keeled over one day. Cornelius Sulla and Gaius’s uncle, Gaius Marius. I suppose the one thing that links all those is the love of a good tale.

One of the worst examples is, view spoiler [we find out at the end of the novel that Julius’ best friend growing up is really Brutus! Mr Iggudlen, who has been at the school for three years, was asked to stand in for a colleague and give a history lesson 18 months ago.
