re The Fifth Child – Doris Lessing. Lessing has written an ominously tangible novel, a powerfully simple contemporary horror story that makes for compulsive reading. I don’t want to know, I don’t want to think. I’m disturbed by Lessing’s portrayal of the disabled child. What expectations “It’s crazy,” said Dorothy. Both of her parents were British: Nobody in the family is pleased and eventually, all the children leave home, off to boarding schools or grandparents’ homes.
But David and Harriet cannot leave well enough alone and lessinb pleased with what they have. This old hen has never hatched a chick and after reading these two books I would, frankly, be terrified to even try.
I mean, we all will have our own view of what is wrong here.

I’ll never be a fan of the postmodern allure of eluding a specific meaning or plot. It tells the story of a young, shy couple that get swept up in a whirlwind romance and set out to have the “perfect life. Paul, the youngest to Ben, becomes a target and develops an anxiety syndrome that will last his entire life.
