See all reviews. Reading a Summr Binchy book is like sitting down with an old friend over a cup of tea and I was saddened to hear of her recent passing.

Let me start by saying I generally enjoy Maeve Binchy’s books. Alas, O’Neill’s efforts prove ill-fated, when fire strikes Ferncourt on its opening day.

Due to the hotel being built, it is going to directly impact a lot of businesses, especially the Ryan pub which is going to have to deal with a loss of customers. I picked up this Maeve Binchy novel as one of my summer reads, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed.

I wanted to read a Maevs Binchy book and picked this one off the library shelf because it had the neatest title. Excellent book, with pages! A character I found interesting only later in the book firedly Grace; she is consistently described as a ray of pure sunshine throughout the book until late in the story, when we see glimpses of something else behind the surface.

Of course it took like another pages before she did. A ton of nonsense told in a very long and drawn out way, then a dumb ending. She also loved traveling, and this was how she found her niche as a writer.


Maeve Binchy’s books are incredibly easy reading – a little old-fashioned and incredibly gossipy. Now realising it is one of her earliest, it explains why I didn’t love it – I think this was when she was still honing the craft she became beloved for. I wis Very disappointed with this book. I like this well enough, but it isn’t one that stands out in my mind. Whelan, who knows all and says nothing; the canon’s drunkard housekeeper, and the town whore.

The story is woven together in an interesting fashion, and has just about everything smumer can happen to people happening to the people sumjer this Irish town that has seen good times and bad and things that happen during the course of the story are, too, both good and bad for the residents, and particularly the main characters, one family from the town and one family from America.

I will say that my favorite characters in binch would be Kate Ryan and Rachel Fine. It is clear and descriptive — giving detail, but doesn’t get into too much detail, but enough to set the scene. Although she described herself as an overweight child, her parents’ attitude gave her the confidence to accept herself for who she was. I found little Eddie Ryan, who was always in trouble despite his good heart, to be very endearing despite being just a minor character.

Binchy’s true strength is dialogue and human relationships – she has a unique understanding of women and their friendships. I definitely recommend reading this book — particularly for Maeve Binchy fans. Like other Binchy titles, the novel depicts the changes affecting Ireland in the late twentieth century.
