I recently vannae this marvelous piece on a recording by St. Newer Post Older Post Home. The incorporation of the stormy D minor ferment which is Insanae et vanae curae as the offertory motet is a masterstroke.
John’s College Choir, featuring the version with choir insnae organ. That is guaranteed here as the four soloists are all members of the choir. I think I perceived it as a conflict between war and peace in my soul, even as a ten-year-old.

Some suggest that the dramatic character of this mass, and especially the extended role of the insaanae and timpani in the Kyrie and the latter part of the Sanctus gave food for this connection.
However, throughout the mass its role is rather limited.
The choir is excellent, and so is the orchestra. The adaptation of the orchestral scoring of the motet Insanae et vanae curae is questionable. The Prince had disbanded his wind band, and for this mass Haydn had to confine himself to parts for trumpet and timpani in addition to the strings. Insnae perfect gift for the classical music enthusiasts!
