Mar 23, David Dayen rated it really liked it. This history of the suburb is valuable in so many ways, but I found the organization of the book with the many sub-headings made it seem like reading the text for a documentary and I kept hearing the accompanying voice of a narrator in my head.
The book is broader than just that though, and traces the American elevation of the suburban ideal and disdain for the inner city back to the 19th century. Why was the traditional urban form abandoned for the suburbs to the degree that it was in the United States, and not in Europe?

One downside I would note though is, in terms of it’s evaluation of the modern landscape, the section that analyizes and acknowledges the shifting positive trends towards a redeveloping of the suburban mindset and a resurgence of downtown revitalization across North America is rather brief.

An integral part of this movement required transportation technology and Jackson describes how the emergence of the omnibus in New York City inthe ferry service inand the commuter steam railroad in first helped move people away from the city by opening up options for residential areas away from congested city centers, yet connected to jobs via public transportation systems.
Since Jackson never intended to write an architectural history of suburbia, Harris notes, the book fails to really explore this aspect. While it wasn’t necessary for it to recount history chronologically it is an analysis, rather than a history book, after allit was compiled as though it were a series of essays written at different times for different purposes and audiences, meaning that it doubled over information several times or made references to things that wouldn’t be explained until later, etc.
