You might be excused, knowing Wyndham’s other books, for thinking that this is a book about lichen taking over the world, but this isn’t one of his post-apocalyptic efforts. Generalizations, of course, but averagely valid, I think. You are commenting using your WordPress.

John Wyndham’s Trouble with Lichen – Kate Macdonald

Unless you have a kindle. Wyndham looks at the whole situation with much more insight. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. A very interesting look into the huge responsibility that comes with scientific discovery.

I still consider it one of his lesser books – it’s also quite short – but much more enjoyable than, say, Chocky. But I’m doing my review for people who like to leave as much as a surprise as possible and don’t read the backs of books a very hazardous practice indeed.

The book, of course, is hardly a perfect affair. Amazon Advertising Find, attract, and engage customers.

The two central characters are Diana Brackley and Francis Saxover, two biochemists who run parallel investigations into the properties of a specific species of lichen after Diana notices that a trace of the specimen prevents some milk turning sour. This strain of lichen, which only grows liichen one small area of Manchuria, has the ability to slow the metabolic rate in an organism, and to retard the aging process! It’s of its time, a time before genetic engineering was dreamt of, and yet curiously relevant to our own age of obsession with self-image and eternal youth.

However, still, the idea of not ageing, being th This John Wyndham book, did not really contain anything that made me feel awesome or even great or wonderful, for that matterand as a result after loving his books like The Day of the TriffidsThe Chrysalids and The Midwich Cuckooshaving read through the years, this one was very much near to boring, and even skippable I should say, much like how Chocky was just prior to this about four years ago. But more could have been crept in. However, it is thought provoking and I think close to the mark of wynvham might happen if anyone discovered a wndham to extend life.

Diana called a meeting of her clients to tell them what their destiny was, was interviewed on the BBC, and in view of the increasing public hysteria and misunderstanding, asked to make a public statement that evening on air.

I thought I had the measure tgouble John Wyndham, albeit only via film versions of The Midwich Cuckoos and The Day of the Triffids – sinister apocalypses, that was his schtick, surely? Ships from and sold by Chiron Media. I was both relieved and rather surprised to find that on the whole, it did. It is different in wit sense he tries to tackle and understand the radical feminism of the 60s and 70s and science fiction.

We later learn that Diana was a Cambridge graduate and a gifted biochemist, who had begun working at the chemical manufacturing plant established by one Professor Francis Saxover.

Apocalypse then

It is certainly an interesting premise and quite well written in Wyndham’s usual English, middle class way. Diana plans to rejoin the world under the guise of being her own sister, and continue the work she left off.

Trouble with Lichen questions how much power is wielded by science in our lives. This is also a problem with a lot of conventional fiction.
